The intelligible world : metaphysics and value
Published in Unknown Binding by AMS Press ()
Author: Wilbur Marshall Urban
Average review score:

Foundations of Communicology
This book is a classic in the history of American (USA) phenomenology. It is an examination of the metaphysical grounding of human values in symbolic practice, especially the ontological function of language in creating ethical values. The book was followed by another work, Language and Reality: The Philosophy of Language and the Principles of Symbolism (1939; reprint Arno Press, 1971), the first systematic presentation in English of Edmund Husserl's work in the Logical Investigations to appear in the United States and the influence is presented in the context of the problematic of "the symbolic, a ground of language and communication." A third book, Beyond Realism and Idealism (George Allen & Unwin, 1949) explores "realism, idealism, and communication and the conditions for intelligible discourse" in which "transcendence of both Object and Subject is pfresupposed." In the Geisteswissenschaften, the emphasis is shifted from "social" to "humanistic sciences." Urban's work in the Philosophy of Communication (Communicology) with an emphasis on semioitc phenomenology is largely overlooked by scholars on ther contemporary scene. His work parallels that of Maurice Merleau-Ponty in France during the same historical period.

The International League: Year-By-Year Statistics, 1884-1953
Published in Library Binding by McFarland & Company (July, 1998)
Author: Marshall D. Wright
Average review score:

Invaluable addition to my baseball library!
I never thought I would find a source for detailed IL stats from the teens and twenties--not even the IL itself was able to help me. But here they all are! The stats are laid out similarly to the Neft/Cohen/Neft "Sports Encyclopedia: Baseball" book, in an easy-to-read, team-by-team fashion. If you are interested in baseball history, and need old IL stats, this is the ticket!

Internetworking with TCP/IP, Vol. III: Client-Server Programming and Applications, Linux/Posix Sockets Version
Published in Hardcover by Prentice Hall (11 September, 2000)
Authors: Douglas E. Comer, David L. Stevens, Marshall T. Rose, and Michael Evangelista
Average review score:

A perfect book for linux network programming
If you are a linux lover and want to dig into client/server (socket) programming , this book is a good choice.

Compared with Steven's Unix Network Programming, this book is more simply and clearly written. Not like Steven who is an expert in explaining details, Comer is good at giving a sound explanation of the network programming principle both in theory and in practice. You will find nice "Algorithm" part in many of the examples which is a good abstraction of the general problem. So after the reading you will feel comfortable because of the gain in not only knowledge but also the kind of insight you could use toward other problems. As a distinguished professor in computer science, Comer spells out the single word of engineering ,"Simplicity is beauty", again by presenting this clearly written TCP/IP programming book.

Also some most exciting stuff like RTP (realtime transport protocol), Web server programming models are also included in this latest edition of his Vol 3. And as you expected, the full source code of all the chapters is available online.

Ireland and the Marshall Plan, 1947-1957
Published in Hardcover by Fremantle Arts Center Pr (April, 2000)
Author: Bernadette Whelan
Average review score:

A seminal, core, comprehensive, multi-layed study.
The European Recovery Programme (commonly called the Marshall Plan after its director, Gen. George C. Marshall)) was instituted by the American government at the end of World War II to prevent a devastated Europe from succumbing to advancing communist domination and to ensure the survival of democratic governance. Between 1947 and 1957 Ireland received just such assistance under the Marshall Plan. In Ireland And The Marshall Plan, 1947-1957, Dr. Bernadette Whelan (lecturer in modern history in the Department of government and Society, University of Limerick) presents the story of Ireland's participation and transects the economic, social, political and diplomatic history of those significant and seminal ten years. Highly recommended reading for students of 20th Century Irish history and development, Dr. Whelan's multi-layered study is comprehensive, "reader friendly", and a seminal work that is an essential, core title for all academic library collections.

A Clear, Concise Overview of Complex Subject
Islam at the Crossroads is informative, insightful, and balanced. It's size and style make it accessible to the concerned layperson. Island in the Sky: The Story of Grand Mesa
Published in Paperback by Western Reflections Inc (01 July, 1999)
Author: Muriel Marshall
Average review score:

The definitive work on Grand Mesa
Muriel Marshall, long time Colorado Western Slope resident and authoritative author, has done it again. In her incomparable, easy-to-read style, she has written the definitive book about a famous landmark on the Western Slope that the Ute Indians, wise in such matters, called Heaven. Most present day visitors know it a Grand Mesa, reputed to be the world's largest flattop mountain. The book is a well-researched, in-depth look at this 2,000 square mile geological phenomenon. It's all here, the history, the people, the place and events that have made Grand Mesa such a unique place. You will learn there are more than a thousand named places on some 50 U.S. Geological Survey quad maps required to cover its surface. Names such as Condemn It Park, Hell's Kitchen, Dead Man's Gulch and Holy Terror Creek are vividly described and framed in historical perspective. The story of Enos Hotchkiss and his entry into the Uncompahgre Valley is both interesting and factually accurate. The hardships endured by the Utes and early settlers are a reminder of the sometimes unforgiving climate and terrain on this one-of-a-kind treasure. You will visit 300 lakes, walk among the springtime flowers, enjoy summer hiking and fishing, revel in its myriad winter activities, and marvel at its incomparable, colorful autumn. Its all here, the history that is truly sometimes stranger than fiction; the people who struggled to settle, but never really tamed, this formidable obstacle; the vast array of flora and fauna found within its boundaries; and the events that have made Grand Mesa a "heaven" to those fortunate enough to have traversed its terrain. This is destined to be the definitive history of Grand Mesa. It is a comprehensive, well written book that is the hallmark of Marshall. For you readers who have read her earlier works, you know what I mean. For you that have not, well...you are in for a treat. Marshall is as great an asset on the Western Slope as the people and places she writes about. You will never truly know Grand Mesa until you read this book.
